— From March 14th to May 18th 2025, the exhibition at Fundació Miro presents the work of two Han Nefkens Foundation - Loop Barcelona Video Art Production Grant winners.

Fundació Joan Miro (Barcelona) presents New Talents in Asian Video Art: Musquiqui Chihying and Timoteus Anggawan Kusno, an exhibition dedicated to the two artists winners of the the Han Nefkens Foundation – Loop Barcelona Video Art Production Grant in 2019 and 2021.

Musquiqui Chihying (Taipei, Taiwan, 1985) won the Grant (a collaboration of the Han Nefkens Foundations and Loop Barcelona with Fundació Joan Miró, Barcelona; Art Sonje Center Seoul; Inside-Out Art Museum, Beijing; MoCA Taipei; Ilham Gallery, Kuala Lumpur) in 2019.

Chihying used the grant to make The Lighting, which was completed in 2021. In this project, the Taiwanese artist explores how the connection between the history of visual culture and the development of specific techniques for photographing black people. Combining the world of technology and the kung fu genre, the film reminds the style of B-movies made with Ektachrome film, popular in the 1970s.

Timoteus Anggawan Kusno (Yogyakarta, Indonesia, 1989) won the Grant (a collaboration of the Han Nefkens Foundation – Loop Barcelona and Fundació Joan Miró, Barcelona; Inside-Out Art Museum, Beijing; MoCA Taipei; ILHAM Gallery, Kuala Lumpur; Centre d’Art Contemporain, Genève; Art Hub Copenhagen) in 2021.

Featured in the exhibition, Reversal and Terra Incognita (2022): the first two parts of Kusno’s Phantoms trilogy. The two films’ leitmotif is the jathilan, a traditional Javanese dance that, under the guidance of a spirit guide, uses the power of music and dance to invoke supernatural forces and allow spirits to possess the bodies of the dancers.
