LOOP Studies is a think tank platform aimed at reflecting on the historical trajectory of and current trends in moving art practices. In gathering together international art professionals, the Studies result in a series of talks, professional meetings and workshops and constitute both a space for shared discussion and professional encounters.

Talks

Expanding on the main theme of the festival, this year’s edition of the Talks will focus on the still-debated relationship between artists’ films and cinema. Spanning those practices that have been variously identified as “expanded cinema”, “cinema of exhibition” or “gallery film”, the debates will address the encounter or conflation between the two industries and question whether or not they could coexits in the same ecosystem. The programme will shape according to three main lines of investigation:

  • Exhibiting Cinema, or the eternal debate on how to better display artists’ films and videos in the gallery space, relate with cinematic codes and implement new curatorial practices;
  • Modes of Film Practice, or the “cluster of historically bound institutions, practices and concepts that form a context within which cinematic media are used”* and that can be deployed to understand avant-garde and experimental filmmaking as well as artists’ films;
  • Artists in Transition, or a study of those creative practices that sit on the fence between video art and cinema.

Among the participating speakers will be Erika Balsom, Raymond Bellour, Sabine Breitwieser, Filipa César, David Claerbout, Jacqui Davies, Antje Ehmann, Gabriela Galcerán, Malcolm Le Grice, Anthony McCall, Ani Molnár, Gloria Moure, Anthony Reynolds, Stefanie Schulte Strathaus, Christine Van Assche
