Born in Spain, Chus Martínez has a background in philosophy and art history. Currently she is the Head of the Institute of Art of the FHNW Academy of Arts and Design in Basel, Switzerland and artistic director of the Ocean space in Venice. At the Institut Kunst, Martínez has initiated a series of commissioned works for der TANK, the exhibition space on the Campus of the Arts: Fabian Marti (2015); Mathilde Rosier (2016) and this year Ingela Ihrman (open during Art). At the Institut Kunst she is as well developing a cycle of international presentations and a research project on the oceans in collaboration with TBA21–Academy an interdisciplinary research initiated by Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary conceived by Markus Reymann in 2011.
Before her position in Basel, Martínez was the Chief Curator at El Museo Del Barrio, New York. She was dOCUMENTA (13) Head of Department, and Member of Core Agent Group. Previously she was Chief Curator at MACBA, Barcelona (2008 to 2011), Director of the Frankfurter Kunstverein (2005–08) and Artistic Director of Sala Rekalde, Bilbao (2002–05). For the 51st Biennale di Venezia (2005), Martínez curated the National Pavilion of Cyprus, and in 2008 served as a Curatorial Advisor for the Carnegie International and in 2010 for the 29th Bienal de São Paulo. Last years she curated and produced “KölnSkulptur #9”, a Sculpture Park Cologne (2017-2019) and an exhibition on Metamorphosis, at Castello di Rivoli, Torino on February 2018. She is currently working on a book on contemporary art and nature.
