Persona Syndrom draws on a powerful scene from Ingmar Bergman’s film Persona, portraying a special relationship between two women. While one of the women remains silent throughout the entire film, the other begins to reveal her innermost self. In a key moment in the film, the protagonist tells of one of her most intimate experiences – an erotic encounter with a stranger. Magdalena von Rudy (*1973, Poland) mirrors this highly emotional scene in her video work, in a medial setting in which the boundaries between the protagonist and the viewer increasingly merge. The characters in the video – who indeed seem to personify the two women in the Bergman film – are later revealed as being viewers of the film themselves. The spoken German text is in fact a moving simultaneous translation of the Swedish original.
