Influenced by an archaeology of contemporary media, Johan Grimonprez’s work highlights the tension between the intimate image and the globality of globalization. It explores our contemporary sublime, marked by an industry of fear that has infected political and social dialogue. By proposing new narratives to tell a story, his work emphasizes a multiplicity of realities.

His conservation projects have been exhibited in museums around the world, such as the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich, and MoMA. His works are part of the collections of the Centre Georges Pompidou, the 21st Century Contemporary Art Museum of Kanazawa, and Tate Modern in London.

His feature films include Dial H-I-S-T-O-R-Y (1997, in collaboration with novelist Don DeLillo, selected by The Guardian as one of the “30 great works of video art history”), Double Take (2009, in collaboration with writer Tom McCarthy), and Shadow World (2016, in collaboration with journalist Andrew Feinstein).
