Cuculí intertwines a series of short stories of the artist’s visit to Japan. Most anecdotes, though, get frustrated by the lack of a substantial piece of information. Interspersed with these stories, a female voice explains biological facts about the singing of birds. The recognition of these calls through aide-memoire phrases invented by bird guides and the etymology of their names function as metaphors for the artist’s confrontation with an unfamiliar culture. The high-tech aesthetics pursued throughout the film, although resembling of Tokyo, was actually achieved through the motions and lights of a model staged at the artist’s studio after his return.
