Steina and Woody Vasulka

Steina and Woody Vasulka are pioneers of video art, who through their lifelong dialogue with machines – from cathode-ray televisions to digital computer systems, played a vital role in the advancement and evolution of the medium. Informed by Woody’s background as an engineer and filmmaker and Steina’s training as a classical musician, their artworks deconstruct the materiality of the electronic signal, offering complex explorations of the malleability of the image, the interaction of sound and imagery, and the manipulation of energy. The Vasulka’s extensive body of work and their establishment of the Kitchen in New York in 1971, an experimental institution for video, performance, and cross-disciplinary art, continues to shape video art history and inspire subsequent generations of artists.
